Dolce & Gabbana Collection Review Milan Fashion Week 2014

2/24/2014

"Enchanted Sicily" was the title Dolce & Gabbana gave their Fall 2014 collection. With an enchanted forest in the background, snow swirling around and Tchaikovsky's "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" playing, the mood was set for a magical show.

The collection was filled with embroidered pieces and various styles of appliqués just like previous collections, but this time with a twist. I couldn't help but think my favorite fairy would be a great asset to the show, a gothic Tinkerbell. The only thing missing from the show was pixie dust! Thankfully the design duo made up for lack of loose glitter and ended the show with an army of fairies all wearing the most beautiful black and silver mini dresses.

The show started out a little folky with woodland creatures like foxes and owls stitched onto cloaks and dresses. Some looks had a baroque feel with their heavy gold detailing and mix of dark colors and floral/royal prints. From Snow White to Knights in shining armor to Tinkerbell this collection was sent from an enchanted heaven and I can't get enough of it.

A rose by any other name...

I've been on a hiatus, but I'm bringing it back. I'm talking about rose water, kiddies, and it's time you jump on this bandwagon if you have yet to do so.

I was a loyal user my freshman year and lost my way after I started my sophomore year. Maybe it was because I constantly felt dirty in my dorm room and once I moved out I lost interest in the refreshing spritz? There's really no excuse for why I discontinued using rose water, but I'm here to say I'm back in the game.

Rose water has many uses: cleanser, toner, astringent and moisturizer. It also is refreshing and rejuvenating and is a great pick-me-up whether it's in the morning, mid-day or before a night out on the town.

I used to use the organic rose water sold at Target. It was $8 and it worked wonders. I would keep half in the bottle it came in and transfer the other half into a spray bottle. After washing my face at night and before putting make up on in the morning, I would pour some on a cotton ball and rub it over my face to get rid of left over dirt and oil. After a long day of class and walking in the Carolina heat, I would spray my face before a much-anticipated nap. I would also use it as a natural perfume. We all love the smell of roses, right? A little spritz on my neck and in my hair would keep any hint of sweat down to a minimum. Did I mention the Carolina heat? It's "Famously Hot" for a reason here, people.

Though I've never tried it, rose water is said to be a great natural conditioner for your hair. Mix it in with your shampoo to enhance hair growth.

Add some to your bath water to hydrate and freshen up your skin. The smell will also linger in your house all day! Who doesn't love that? I've recently put a bowl of rose buds on my desk for the scent...and because they look adorable and I'm a sucker for roses, so what?

Apply it directly to dark under eye circles. This should lighten the area whiledecreasing puffiness. We could all use this trick during finals week!

The polar/arctic vortex is upon us, so the time couldn't be more perfect to get ahold of this product. It has anti-inflammatory properties, which helps soothe your dry, irritated skinthat can result from being in the cold for too long. This also makes it the perfect toner!

And if you needed more reasons to use rose water, I'll give you two more: you can spray it on your linens to freshen up your home, and you can keep some in the kitchen to add to your favorite yogurt. I know you're sick of eating that plain-could-possibly-be-sour-cream Greek yogurt. I know you are. Seriously, I know you are. Add a little rose water, and honey!, to the mix to give this snack a little help. You know it needs it. Seriously, you know it needs it.

Day 7 has wrapped and the week has come to an end! Get your tissues ready, kiddies.
Nanette Lepore debuted her collection at the Salon. Rich hues of pink and deep red filled the runway. Also on trend during this show were socks peeping out of booties, a personal favorite of mine.
Kaufmanfranco was my favorite show of the day and one of my top of the week. Solid white, black, navy and icy blue looks made this collection effortlessly chic and simply stunning. The pale blue shade is something we haven't really seen this week, and I loved the change. (It's also roughly the same shade I would like to dye my hair..) The design duo showed off asymmetrical cutouts, sheer pieces and coats that make you want it to be winter all year 'round just so you could have a reason so wear them. Well done, boys, job well done.
Reed Krakoff showed off sporty and chic this afternoon. Snakeskin was a big trend as well as the usual black and camel oversized coats. Cobalt blue was a great addition to this collection, it will be a perfect way to brighten the dreary late fall, winter months. They also showed off the "bucket bag." I'd love to get my hands on a pair of those snakeskin booties!
Marchesa...Need I say more?

Lee Sang Bong reassured us that, aside from black and neutrals, red is the color to own for Fall/Winter 2014.

New York Fashion Week Day 6

The final days are closing in on us. Day 6 has come and gone and it wasn't one to forget.
Badgley Mischka showed this morning and was stunning. They always find a way to make their girl look timeless, chic and wonderfully feminine. Mark + James's pieces are detailed to perfection each season and Fall/Winter 2014 will be no different. From stunning shoulder detailing to all over beading, this collection will leaving you in awe. E! News' Guilanna Rancic, 30 Rock's Katrina Bowden (in my favorite Mark + James print) and model Petra Nemcova were flawless front row ladies during the show.
Marc by Marc Jacobs new designers Katie Hillier + Luella Bartley debuted their first collection with the line and received much praise. It was fun, edgy and full of flare. Skater, 90s, bold prints, but still pretty and powerful at times. Power girl meets 90s Clueless skater? Sign me up now.  It was all over the place in the best way possible. It's similar to what my mind looks like on a daily basis, but maybe add a few dogs in the mix. I'm pretty much obsessed with the entire collection.
Plus, I would LOVE to have the bow-clad top.
Oscar de la Renta debuted with the help of Karlie Kloss. Not much needs to be said. Flawless, elegant, femininity in the form of clothing.
J. Crew's presentation showed off their RTW collection.

Carolina Herrera was at the Theatre where Karlie Kloss opened and closed the show. More black on black made its way down the runway, proving that black never goes out of style. Reds, prints and blues were also apart of the collection.
Tommy Hilfiger turned his location at 643 Park Avenue into a snowy mountain to match his ski wear inspired line. Perfect timing with Sochi 2014!
Milly by Michelle had an amazing beanie filled Pre-Fall collection and this Fall/Winter collection was just as brilliant. Furs, metallics, black on black, more neutrals and blush tones filled the runway as did this full ruffled skirt. I've found that I'm really into skirts and dresses recently, so all of these girly, flirty pieces being shown has me absolutely swooning. Can't I just own all of her Pre-Fall and Fall?
Karen Walker, not to be confused with the hilarious drunken supporting character on Will & Grace, debuted her Fall/Winter collection and it was right up my alley. I had not been aware of this designer before, but I certainly am now. Filled with navy, black and white prints, florals and reds, it is a winter's dream.

All that glitters is gold at Reem Acra.
Zac Posen's collection was packed with full gorgeous gowns. Structure, capes and texture made this an unforgettable season for Mr. Posen. Coco Rocha modeled for his show and she was the epitome of the theme: ultra feminine and equally as edgy. Perfection. My favorite collection. I can't wait to see which gowns make it to the red carpet and who wears them. Excuse me as I post way too many photos.
Donna Karan was all about being fierce and sassy tonight.
Low cuts, high slights and higher boots. Yes, girl. Yes.

More full skirts and party dresses at Dennis Basso.

Noon by Noor was fun and fierce.

We've made it to the half-way mark! Day 4 has come to a close and already I can feel the pang of sadness that comes with the end of NYFW. Here are my favorites of the day:
Lela Rose kicked off day 4 at the Salon. This first gown is red carpet ready and the silhouette is flawless. She had a lot of color in her collection as well as following suit with the black and white trend. There were also more knee length coats for winter 2014.
David Tlale was at the Pavilion and I may have found my favorite look of the week so far. Full and flirty skirt with a sheer top and it's navy. Love it. I would find a reason to wear that outfit at least once a week.

DKNY had one of my favorite shows of the last four days! It was sporty, chic and badass. Flat bill hats, leather, black on black, tattoos and letterman inspired jackets made it down the runway.
Picture
Brian Lichtenberg's presentation at the Hub was all about the color!
Picture
Vivienne Tam showed at the Theatre and red was definitely a trend for her collection. These red booties are to die for!
Picture
Czar by Cesar Galindo had a presentation at the Hub. I am loving this all white matching skirt and top set.
Picture
Parkchoonmoo loved the neutrals today, and we do, too!
Diane von Fürstenberg was on point yet again and stuck true to her style with bright colors, bold prints and wrap dresses.

Here are the highlights from Day 3 of NYFW:
Picture
Ruffian also shows winter whites and adds bright red tights that will be perfect for winter 2014.
Picture
Lacoste keeps it sporty and chic as always.
Picture
Jill Stuart followed suit with oversized camel colored coats. A must-have for staying warm in 2014.
Picture
Herve Leger by Max Azria kept the bandage alive.
Picture
Mara Hoffman added tons of color to her collection that debuted today.
Adeam continued the black trend. I mean, really, is all black ever out of trend? They also added one of my favorite colors to their Fall/Winter collection: blush! With all of the neutral tones we've been seeing on the runway, this shade will pair perfectly along side them.

Asia Fashion Collection also added blush tones to their palette.

New York Fashion Week Day 2

Day 2 of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week has come and gone and the collections did not disappoint. Let's go through my favorites of the day, shall we?

Jewelry line Dannijo had a presentation last night after I posted my review of Day 1. It was too amazing to leave out of today's post. The line is designed by sisters Danielle and Jodie and I was fortunate enough to take a seminar with them and speak with them at Teen Vogue Fashion University this past October. Their concept was "#boxerina" fully equipped with a boxing ring, tutus, and pointe shoes. WGSN described it as "Grace meets gusto and feminine meets fun." If Dannijo wasn't on your radar before, you need to have them on it now!
Rebecca Vallance was not originally on my "must watch" list, but after seeing her pieces she definitely should have been. She had a presentation in the Hub this morning and I thought her collection was beautiful. Winter whites and sheers were on display for her Fall 2014 Ready to Wear collection. The pieces were simple, chic and very easy to translate from "runway to reality." Love love love it!
Nautica was next at the Salon and the men looked as if they were off to compete in slope style in Sochi. They must have gotten word that snowboarders have stolen many hearts because the men were wearing big coats, goggles and boots. No complaints over here. The Nautica men always impress. Grab a tissue, you're going to need one to wipe the drool off your chin.
Rebecca Minkoff was at the Theatre with her Fall/Winter 2014 collection. She had over-the-knee boots and a new taken on the beanie: furry, big and bright. A lot of her pieces seemed to be inspired by menswear, which I loved, because they were big, boxy shapes.
A few of my favorite looks and pictures from the day from other collections:

That's a wrap on Day 2! Which look are you most ready to rock?
I think mine is the sheer socks and heels from Misha Nonoo.

New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2014 Day 1

2/6/2014

The time of year is upon us yet again, my dear fashion-obsessed readers: New York Fashion Week. I know in previous posts I have said that awards season is the most wonderful time of the year, but c'mon. For one thing, we know I love exaggerating when I'm excited and obsessed with something. For another, anything that deals with this much fashion related news is worthy of being deemed my most wonderful time of the year.

It's the picture-perfect post card some of us can only dream of: various halls and tents booming with music and statuesque models, snow lining the streets and falling from the sky, and the industry's biggest names traipsing around the city venue to venue giving photographers the best possible photo op for "Street Style" sections of websites, blogs, etc.
Here's some short-ish coverage on my favorite shows from Day 1.
Nicholas K's Fall 2014 collection kicked off the week at the Pavilion this morning at 9 am. The show was produced by none other than Kelly Cutrone's People's Revolution. Unfortunately, I could not live stream this show during class because my professor does not allow laptops in class. The torture! I was itching at the seams..clothing, seams, ha..to get my hands on photos from the show. The color palette was right up my alley: black, gray, navy. The future for Fall 2014 is looking bright (dark) already! I know no one was mad at the selection of male modes, either.
BCBG Max Azria followed Nicholas K at 10 am in the Theatre. Their color scheme was lighter than the first show, but still stuck to a relatively neutral palette. That's what I like to see BCBG. Fur was also on trend at the show lining coats and other pieces. Man Repeller tweeted during the show about the style of the new coats: "The mullet coat at BCBG asks this: am I willing to forfeit front leg warmth for toasty hamstrings? #nyfw"
Raoul has been named "the one to watch" and I couldn't agree more. Black and white, a line after my own heart, was on trend for this 10:30 am presentation at the Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse. One of my best friends, Melissa, works in their sales department, so this presentation was especially cool for me to look out for! She's worked so hard with them and I'm so happy it's all paying off.
Richard Chai showed at the Salon at 11 am. My favorite part of the collection were the knee length coats. I'm sure all of the attendees were dying to get their frozen-from-the-polar-vortex hands on one of these beauties. Joe Jonas was backstage while Bryan Greenberg and Zachary Quinto sat front row (Has anyone else seen people calling it "#FROW" now? Thoughts?) If I have any male readers, take notice of these fashion-forward men. Women, show these photos to your men.
New designers Creatures of the Wind took place at the Pavilion and had a unique set up.
Tadashi Shoji was up and again black was on trend. They also included beautiful reds that will look fabulous against our summer-is-over-I'm-pale-again skin. Or if you're like me, your year around skin.
Todd Snyder's men were on point this evening at the Pavilion. The concept was "Mod Gents" and Snyder updated the Mod sensibility of the early 60's. They also stuck with a pretty neutral color palette. Oh, the things we would do to be in that room right now. To see the clothes, of course!
In other fashion news, Net-a-Porter is launching a new magazine tomorrow called Porter. Giselle is their very first cover model and the the veteran model does not disappoint. Check it out on newsstands and stay in-the-know on all things fashion.

Stop, you're making me blush!

2/3/2014

This color is near impossible to find in the same exact shade twice. I say this from experience! I have used this color, and many variations of this color, in my room two years in a row. It is very difficult to do, but when you find the perfect shade you've been looking for, it's like an old cartoon and hearts pop in and out of your eye sockets. Last year I used it as a duvet cover and this year I decided to paint––okay my mom painted, but I picked the shade!–– my desk and dressers this feminine hue. The infamous color is blush and lately I can't get enough of it. If it's in this shade, it's mine.

It's also becoming impossible to get away from now that it's February and Valentine's Day is upon us. Instead of being a Valentine's Day Grinch and sulking around, join the party!   You can incorporate this color into your life in any way you want: clothing, jewelry, make up, candles, throw blankets, throw pillows, flowers, wall art, the possibilities are endless! Just remember that the beauty of the color becomes addicting and the repeated failure of finding the same shade twice is heart-breaking. You've been warned, dear reader.
Here are a few ways you can satisfy your crush on blush:
